Cookie Policy
This document explains how Inkwell, Inc. uses cookies and similar tracking technologies on our platform.
This Cookie Policy explains how Inkwell ("we", "us", "our") uses cookies and similar tracking technologies when you visit or use our platform at inkwell.ai. This policy should be read alongside our Privacy Policy.
1. What Are Cookies & Similar Technologies
Cookies are small text files placed on your device by your browser when you visit a website. They allow the site to recognize your device and store certain information.
Local Storage is a web browser feature that allows websites to store key-value pairs persistently in your browser. Unlike cookies, local storage data is not sent with every HTTP request.
Session Storage is similar to local storage but data is cleared when the browser tab is closed.
2. Categories of Cookies & Storage We Use
2.1 Strictly Necessary (Cannot Be Disabled)
These are essential for the platform to function. Without them, you cannot log in or use core features.
| Name / Key | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
next-auth.session-token | Cookie | NextAuth.js session authentication | Session / 30 days |
next-auth.csrf-token | Cookie | CSRF protection for authentication forms | Session |
next-auth.callback-url | Cookie | Stores redirect URL after authentication | Session |
inkwell_access_token | Local Storage | JWT access token for API authentication | Until logout |
inkwell_refresh_token | Local Storage | JWT refresh token for session renewal | Until logout |
2.2 Functional / Preference
These remember your choices and personalize your experience. Disabling them may reset your preferences on each visit.
| Name / Key | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
theme | Local Storage (next-themes) | Stores light/dark/system theme preference | Persistent |
inkwell_sidebar_collapsed | Local Storage | Remembers whether the sidebar is collapsed or expanded | Persistent |
inkwell_onboarding_* | Local Storage | Tracks which onboarding tours and steps have been completed | Persistent |
2.3 Analytics / Performance
These help us understand how users interact with Inkwell so we can improve the platform. Data collected is aggregated and anonymized.
| Name / Key | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
inkwell_analytics_consent | Local Storage | Records whether you consented to analytics tracking | Persistent |
| Internal analytics events | Server-side | Page views, feature usage, generation counts — logged server-side, not via cookies | 90 days |
3. Third-Party Cookies
The following third-party services may set their own cookies when you interact with Inkwell:
| Provider | Purpose | When Set | Their Policy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stripe | Payment processing, fraud prevention | When you visit the checkout or billing page | Stripe Privacy Policy |
| OAuth authentication | When you sign in with Google | Google Privacy Policy |
We do not use any advertising cookies or third-party tracking pixels. We do not participate in ad networks and do not sell data to advertisers.
4. How to Manage Cookies
4.1 Browser Settings
Most browsers allow you to view, manage, and delete cookies and local storage through their settings. Common paths:
- Chrome: Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and other site data
- Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data
- Safari: Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data
- Edge: Settings > Cookies and site permissions
4.2 Impact of Disabling Cookies
- Strictly necessary cookies: Disabling these will prevent you from logging in or using Inkwell.
- Functional cookies: Your theme preference, sidebar state, and onboarding progress will reset on each visit.
- Analytics cookies: Disabling these does not affect your use of Inkwell — you may simply opt out via the consent mechanism.
4.3 Do Not Track
We respect the Do Not Track (DNT) browser setting. When we detect a DNT signal, we disable non-essential analytics tracking for that session.
5. Data Retention for Cookies
Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser. Persistent cookies and local storage entries remain until their specified expiry or until you manually clear them. Server-side log data associated with cookie identifiers is retained for 90 days.
6. Updates to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy periodically to reflect changes in technology, legislation, or our practices. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date. Material changes will be communicated via in-app notification.
